-13th century Teutonic Commander on foot from the time of the Prussian Crusade

Komtur, originating from the Latin term "commentator," denoted a significant rank within military orders, notably the Teutonic Knights. Within the Teutonic Order's governance structure, a Komtur served as the commander of a fundamental administrative unit known as a Kommende (also referred to as Komturei). The Komtur was responsible for providing sustenance and support to the Order's Knights through the resources generated from local estates. Additionally, the Komtur oversaw several Procurators. A Kommende typically housed a convent consisting of no fewer than 12 brothers. Multiple Kommenden collectively constituted a Ballei province.

The Grosskomtur (Grand Commander), among the highest echelons of the Knights, held great importance in the administration of the Order, serving as the second-in-command following the Grand Master. Situated at Malbork Castle (Marienburg), the Grosskomtur, along with four other senior officers including the Grand Marshal, was appointed directly by the Grand Master. Together, they comprised the council of Großgebietiger, possessing authority over the entire order.
