In the 15th century, a German man-at-arms was a professional, heavy knights, highly proficient with weapons and protected by full plate armor in the "Gothic" style. While knights came from the noble class, a man-at-arms (or Spiess in German) could also be from the gentry or a wealthy mercenary.
German armorers were renowned for producing high-quality and elaborate plate armor. The defining style was known as Gothic armor, which featured a distinct aesthetic.
