This item is part of the “Punic Wars: Hannibal at the Gates” collection. Roman Republic Faction
The Roman ballista was a torsion-powered siege engine used to launch large bolts, arrows, or stones with high precision. Unlike a standard bow, it relied on the energy stored in twisted skeins of animal sinew or hair rather than the flex of its arms.
Core Features
-Mechanism: Power was derived from two vertical torsion springs made of twisted rope or sinew. Two wooden arms were inserted into these skeins and connected by a bowstring.
-Operation: A winch and ratchet system pulled the bowstring back into a locked position. Once a bolt or stone was loaded onto the slider, a trigger released the tension, snapping the arms forward.
-Projectiles: It fired heavy iron-tipped bolts or spherical stone balls. Standard stone projectiles could weigh up to 60 pounds.
-Performance: The largest machines could reach distances of over 500 yards (460 m). Some specialized versions, like the Ballista Fulminalis, reportedly reached even greater distances.
