This item is part of the “Punic Wars: Hannibal at the Gates” collection.
Hasdrubal Gisco was a Carthaginian general who fought during the Second Punic War in Iberia and North Africa. He is often confused with his contemporary, Hasdrubal Barca, the brother of Hannibal.
Military career:
-Battles of the Upper Baetis (211 BC): In Iberia, Hasdrubal Gisco joined forces with Hasdrubal Barca and Mago Barca to encircle and defeat Roman forces, killing the Roman commanders Gnaeus and Publius Scipio.
-Battle of Ilipa (206 BC): Hasdrubal Gisco commanded a large army alongside Mago Barca against the Roman general Scipio Africanus near modern-day Seville. Though they outnumbered the Romans, they were decisively defeated. This battle effectively ended Carthaginian power in Iberia.
-Diplomatic efforts: After his defeat in Iberia, Hasdrubal Gisco crossed to North Africa and forged an alliance with Syphax, the king of the Masaesyli Numidians. To solidify the alliance, Hasdrubal Gisco offered Syphax his daughter, Sophonisba, in marriage.
-Battle of the Great Plains (203 BC): Hasdrubal and Syphax combined their forces against Scipio Africanus, who had landed in North Africa. In a sneak attack, Scipio set fire to the Carthaginian-Numidian camp, causing massive losses. Though they raised another army, they were again defeated by Scipio and his ally Masinissa.
Reputation:
-The Roman historian Livy called Hasdrubal Gisco "the best and most distinguished general this war produced after the three sons of Hamilcar".
-However, Livy also recorded a less complimentary quote from Fabius Maximus, who described Hasdrubal Gisco as "a general who showed his speed chiefly in retreat".
-Historians suggest his real talents were in diplomacy, as he was able to raise large armies in Iberia and Africa even after suffering severe defeats.
Death:
Following his final defeat in Africa, Hasdrubal Gisco returned to Carthage, where he was scorned for his failures. To avoid being lynched by an angry mob, he committed suicide in 202 BC.
