During the Punic Wars, the Greek city-state of Syracuse relied on a variety of specialized units and mathematical innovators to defend its sovereignty against the Roman Republic and Carthage. The most famous "specialist" was the brilliant inventor Archimedes, who engineered unprecedented mechanical countermeasures that stalled the Roman advance for two years. 
Alongside technological innovations, the Syracusan army utilized highly effective military specialists, including:

Gastraphetes (Belly-Bowmen): Elite operators of the early Greek cross-bow, which allowed for extreme range and piercing power against armored infantry and siege crews.

Oxybeles Artillery Crews: Specialized engineering teams trained to operate heavy, torsion-powered bolt-shooters to devastate enemy ranks and naval vessels.

Cretan Archers: Renowned mercenary ranged specialists integrated into the Syracusan tactical line to break enemy formations with precise, long-range fire.

The Standard Bearer (Semeiophoros): Though less common in early classical Greece than in later Macedonian or Roman periods, many tabletop games include a banner or standard bearer. They carried a city-state's specific religious symbol or icon to act as a visual rally point for the men
