Illyrian Skirmishers were light infantry from the western Balkans, renowned for their mastery of hit-and-run tactics, raids, and ambushes in rough terrain. They were typically armed with javelins for harassing enemy formations and carried secondary weapons like the sica (a curved sword) or axes for close-quarters fighting. Because they wore little to no armor, they relied on speed and the protection of light shields—often oval or round convex styles—to survive engagements.
