This item is part of the “Punic Wars: Hannibal at the Gates” collection.
During the Punic Wars, Greek hoplites from Syracuse transitioned from a dominant regional force fighting Carthage into tragic pawns caught between Rome and Carthage. Before Rome's rise, Syracusan hoplites spent centuries defending Sicily from Carthaginian expansion in a series of conflicts known as the Sicilian Wars (or Anglo-Punic Wars). However, by the time the Punic Wars began in 264 BC, the strategic landscape had shifted completely, forcing Syracuse to navigate alliances with two massive empires.
The Evolution of the Syracusan Hoplite
-Adaptable Tactics: Unlike rigid mainland Greek phalanxes, Syracusan hoplites adapted to rugged Sicilian terrain.
-Looser Formations: They utilized a more flexible, open formation to counter nimble native Sicilian horsemen.
-Foreign Influence: Their armies heavily integrated Italian mercenaries, such as Campanians, blending Greek armor with Italian styles.
-Combined Arms: Syracusan generals relied on advanced tech like artillery and strong cavalry support.
Ideal for games like HAIL CAESAR, Clash of Spears, SAGA, and other wargames.
This set contains 8 unpainted Italic artillery crews miniatures and bases.
Ideal for games like SAGA and other wargames.
