Macedonian hypaspists were the elite, highly trained infantry guard of Philip II and Alexander the Great, designed for flexibility and rapid movement on the battlefield. Equipped like traditional hoplites with a large aspis shield, they protected the vulnerable flanks of the heavy sarissa phalanx and facilitated coordination between heavy infantry and cavalry.
