Marcus Claudius Marcellus, often called the "Sword of Rome," was a prominent Roman general and politician known for his military achievements during the Second Punic War. He earned this moniker for his aggressive and successful campaigns, particularly his capture of Syracuse. Marcellus served as consul five times and was renowned for his skill in single combat, earning the spolia opima for killing the Gallic chieftain Viridomarus.
