In the Roman Republic, a Praefectus was a formal title for a variety of officials, often with a further qualification, who held authority delegated from a higher magistrate or authority. They were not elected magistrates themselves but were appointed for specific tasks or to oversee particular areas, such as military units, city administration, or specific responsibilities like grain distribution or treasury management.
