In ancient Carthage's military, the command group for heavy cavalry was typically composed of Carthaginian citizens, often from the nobility.

  These elite horsemen were well-equipped, often with Greek-style weaponry. Their equipment included a lance or spear, and they fought with discipline and high morale.
  As heavy cavalry, their role was to charge the enemy and break their infantry formations. They were a shock troop, meant to hit hard at a decisive moment.
  The most senior command positions in the Carthaginian army, including over heavy cavalry, were held by Carthaginian citizens. 

   Communication and command during battles relied on standards and symbols. Each ethnic unit in the Carthaginian army would have its own standard, though details on the specific emblems for Carthaginian heavy cavalry are limited.
   The overall supreme command of the military was held by a general appointed by the Carthaginian Senate. This general would control the movements and coordination of all units, including the heavy cavalry.
   Successful Carthaginian commanders, such as Hannibal, were particularly adept at integrating their diverse mercenary and citizen forces into a cohesive fighting unit. They demonstrated superior cavalry tactics, notably at the Battle of Cannae.

  Mercenary forces: Foreign soldiers from areas like Iberia, Gaul, and Greece made up the bulk of the infantry.
  Liby-Phoenician spearmen: This reliable and well-armored unit formed the backbone of the army's infantry.
  Numidian light cavalry: Highly skilled and mobile, the Numidians were crucial for reconnaissance, scouting, and flanking maneuvers.
War elephants: These were often used in the center of the formation to disrupt and intimidate enemy lines.
