In the Roman Republic, a decurio was a cavalry officer who commanded a squadron known as a turma. While the name literally translates to "leader of 10 men," the structure of the Republican cavalry unit was more complex.

A decurio was responsible for training, drilling, and leading his men into battle. They were also responsible for daily duties, such as inspections, maintaining discipline, and ensuring the health of the horses.
