Incendiary pigs were a tactic used in ancient warfare to disrupt enemy war elephants. The idea was to douse pigs in flammable substances like pitch or tar, light them on fire, and release them towards the elephants. The elephants, terrified by the fire and squealing, would panic and often turn back on their own lines, causing chaos and potentially trampling their troops.
While the Romans are known to have employed this tactic, it's important to note that they were not the only ones. The earliest recorded use of incendiary pigs is attributed to the Macedonians during the siege of Megara in 266 BC. The Megarians, facing a siege by Antigonus II Gonatas, used flaming pigs to disrupt his war elephants.
The effectiveness of incendiary pigs is debated by some historians, with some suggesting it was more of a psychological tactic or a legendary account rather than a widespread military strategy. Regardless, the concept highlights the creativity and unconventional thinking employed in ancient warfare, particularly when facing the challenge of war elephants.
