Roman Marching Camp Tents. 9 Pieces. 28 mm
Types of Roman Tents
Roman marching camps utilized various types of tents, each serving a specific purpose and hierarchy within the army:
- Contubernium Tent: These were the standard tents for common soldiers, housing 8-10 men. They typically measured around 3x3 meters and were about 1.5 meters high. A mule transported each tent.
- Officer's Tent: Larger and more elaborate, these were for centurions and higher-ranking officers. They were taller than Contubernium tents, reaching around 2.4 meters.
- Commander's Tent (Praetorium): The largest and most luxurious, used by the general or high command, sometimes exceeding 3.6 meters in length.
- Auxiliary Tent: Smaller tents, often used by non-citizen troops, typically measuring about 2.5x2.5 meters.
- Team Tent: Large communal structures, reaching 6-8 meters or more, used for purposes like dining or meetings.
- Kitchen Tent (Culina): Spacious tents with high ceilings for smoke dispersion, housing cooking equipment and provisions.
Materials and Construction
Roman tents were primarily constructed from materials like leather for the outer layer due to its water resistance, with goatskin being a common choice for its lightness and strength. Inner layers used linen or canvas for insulation, while wood was used for poles and pegs. Waterproof seams, such as the reinforced or welt seam, were used for sewing.
Significance
Roman tents, particularly the Contubernium tent, were crucial for the army's ability to quickly set up fortified camps (castra) after a day's march, aiding in efficient movement and communication. They provided shelter and maintained order during campaigns and sieges.
