Roman siege towers, also known as "turres ambulatoriae," were imposing structures used by the Roman army during sieges to overwhelm enemy fortifications. These mobile wooden towers, often several stories high, were crucial in enabling Roman soldiers to assault city walls and gain a strategic advantage.
Construction and Design:
- Materials: Siege towers were primarily constructed of wood, reinforced with iron and covered with materials like animal hides or iron plates for fire protection and defense against projectiles. However, some armored towers proved too heavy and cumbersome to move, and this type of reinforcement was eventually abandoned.
- Structure: Towers were built on a square plan with a grated wooden structure, resembling a truncated pyramid. The front and sides were covered with boards and could feature assault platforms and even a battering ram.
- Height: The towers were designed to be equal to or even taller than the enemy walls, allowing Roman soldiers to engage defenders and gain a vantage point. Some towers, like the one used at Masada, reached over 26 meters in height. Julius Caesar's towers during the Gallic Wars could have up to ten levels.
- Mobility: Siege towers were often built on-site and had wheels or rollers at their base to facilitate movement. Constructing them at a safe distance and then moving them closer reduced the risks faced by the builders.
- Internal Structure: Inside, platforms and ladders allowed soldiers to move between levels. Exceptionally large towers might have separate ladders for ascending and descending.
