This item is part of the “Punic Wars: Hannibal at the Gates” collection.
In ancient Carthage, the Sacred Band was an elite heavy infantry unit composed of wealthy citizens.
What we know about the historical Sacred Band comes primarily from Greek and Roman accounts, as few Carthaginian records survived.
The unit was comprised of 2,000 to 3,000 citizens from Carthage's most elite and wealthy families. This was highly unusual, as most Carthaginian armies relied on foreign mercenaries and allied troops.
Their high-status armor and weapons, which were self-funded, made them visually distinct. They wore gleaming bronze cuirasses, greaves, and often used Greek-style hoplite shields. Some accounts describe their armor as being white or adorned with expensive Tyrian purple cloth.
The Sacred Band fought in a phalanx formation, similar to Greek hoplites. Their elite status meant they were typically placed in a prominent position, such as the right wing, where they served as the reliable core of the army.
The Sacred Band is last mentioned in historical sources during the fourth century BC. They were famously destroyed while fighting bravely against Agathocles of Syracuse at the Battle of White Tunis in 310 BC.
