Hippocrates was a prominent pro-Carthaginian military leader and tyrant who co-ruled the ancient Greek city-state of Syracuse from 214 to 212 BC alongside his brother, Epicydes. Born to a Carthaginian mother and a Syracusan father, the brothers served as envoys for Hannibal Barca during the Second Punic War. They successfully manipulated political instability within Sicily to break Syracuse’s long-standing alliance with Rome. Their joint tyranny directly triggered the famous, devastating Siege of Syracuse, which eventually ended independent Syracusan history.
